Slower to 20 for safer streets initiative

Durham County Council is introducing part-time 20mph speed limits around 33 schools in the County as part of a "Slow to 20 for safer streets" initiative. Slower speeds outside of schools and in local neighbourhoods will improve road safety and create a safer and healthier community.

Slower driving speeds will result in:

  • Fewer road casualties
  • Encourage more people to walk or cycle
  • Children are able to play outside safely and can be more active
  • Less noise for nearby homes
  • The speed limits will be supported with education and training in schools and the raising of awareness in local communities. Education and training in schools will provide young people with the knowledge and skills they need to enable them to be safer pedestrians and cyclists (with parental permission required before they walk or cycle to school alone or with friends). Young people will also be asked to help with raising awareness in the community by for example, producing a newsletter to distribute to local residents. The school your child / children attend is included in this initiative and will have a part-time 20mph speed limit installed. This will be defined by signs and the limit will be in force during the period of time that the flashing lights operate.

Please see the map below for further details:

We are asking all parents/carers to assist with this initiative by respecting the speed restrictions that are in place and also to ease congestion around the school entrances by parking a little further away and walking.
